From IGCSE to AS Level: What Actually Changes on a Cambridge International Course

What the Cambridge International syllabuses specify changes between IGCSE and AS Level: assumed knowledge, designed teaching hours, paper structure, what is supplied in the exam, and why practical work stops being optional.

Students who have made this move describe it in fairly consistent terms. In a 2019 Cambridge teacher workshop, students described the move to AS as one where "Content is hard in comparison to IGCSEs", alongside "the quantity of work" and "the amount of work you need to do independently".

That is student voice rather than a Cambridge finding — a summary of what students said on video at a workshop for teachers, not a statement in any syllabus. But it names three different problems, and difficulty, volume and independence are not the same thing.

This article covers the parts Cambridge actually specifies, taken from the syllabuses themselves for Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology. Where something is true of one subject and not another, it says so — the differences between subjects here are larger than most students expect.

There Is No Grade Requirement, and Students Look in the Wrong Document

The most common question about starting AS Level is what grade you need. Cambridge does not answer it in the place you would look.

No AS Level syllabus states a required or expected IGCSE grade. Not the Mathematics 9709 syllabus for 2026 and 2027 (version 4), not the Chemistry 9701 syllabus for 2025 to 2027 (version 1), and not the Biology 9700 syllabus for the same cycle. There is no entry-requirement section, no minimum, and no recommended grade anywhere in those documents.

The grade band does exist — but it appears in the IGCSE syllabuses, looking forward. The Mathematics 0580 syllabus (version 3), the Chemistry 0620 syllabus (version 1) and the Biology 0610 syllabus (version 2) each carry a progression statement of the same form: candidates who achieve grades A* to C are "well prepared to follow a wide range of courses including Cambridge International AS & A Level" in that subject.

That is a statement about preparedness, not a gate: it describes what an IGCSE leads to, not whom an AS teacher should admit. The decision belongs to your school, which sets its own thresholds. If someone tells you Cambridge requires a particular grade to start AS Level, they are describing school policy, not a published rule.

What Cambridge Actually Assumes — and Why Maths Is Different

Here the three subjects diverge sharply, and the divergence is itself the most useful thing to know.

Mathematics is specific. The 9709 syllabus for 2026 and 2027 (version 4) contains a section headed Prior knowledge which states:

"Knowledge of the content of the Cambridge IGCSE™ Mathematics 0580 (Extended curriculum), or Cambridge International O Level (4024/4029), is assumed."

It then names what it expects beyond that: familiarity with scientific notation for compound units, the ability to carry out simple manipulation of surds, and knowledge of the shapes of graphs of the form y = kx to the power n, where n is an integer or plus or minus one half. The same syllabus repeats the point in its Before you start section, recommending that learners have completed a course in mathematics equivalent to Cambridge IGCSE Extended or Cambridge O Level.

The sciences are not specific. Chemistry 9701 (version 1) offers one sentence, under Before you start:

"We recommend that learners starting this course should have completed a course in Chemistry or Co-ordinated Science equivalent to Cambridge IGCSE™ or Cambridge O Level."

Biology 9700 carries the same sentence with the subject name changed. Neither science syllabus has a Prior knowledge section of the kind 9709 provides.

Biology does publish some of its assumptions, but scattered through the subject content rather than gathered in one place. The introduction to Topic 3 in the 9700 syllabus (version 1) notes that "Prior knowledge for this topic is an understanding that an enzyme is a biological catalyst that increases the rate of a reaction and remains unchanged when the reaction is complete." Notes like this appear in some topic introductions and not others. Chemistry 9701 has no equivalent.

So the difference is less about whether Cambridge states its assumptions than about where. Mathematics gathers them into one auditable section. Biology distributes them through the content, topic by topic. Chemistry leaves them to that single recommending sentence.

The Measurable Change: 130 Hours to 180

Cambridge publishes a design figure for every syllabus: the guided learning hours it builds the course around.

IGCSE syllabuses are designed to require about 130 guided learning hours per subject. AS Level syllabuses are designed to require about 180, and a full A Level about 360.

That is roughly fifty additional designed hours per subject at AS, and it is the closest thing Cambridge publishes to a measure of the step-up. An IGCSE at 130 hours and an A Level at 360 are not the same kind of commitment, even in the same subject.

Be precise about what the figure means, though: these are the teaching hours the syllabus is designed around, not a promise about your timetable or a prediction of how long you personally will need.

Time and Pacing: The Same Forty Questions, Thirty More Minutes

The clearest illustration sits in the multiple-choice papers, because at both levels they are the same size.

At IGCSE, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 each set a multiple-choice paper of 40 four-option questions in 45 minutes. At AS Level, Chemistry 9701 and Biology 9700 each set a multiple-choice paper of 40 questions in 1 hour 15 minutes.

Same number of questions. Thirty more minutes. That is roughly one minute seven seconds per question at IGCSE against roughly one minute fifty-three at AS.

The time allowed per question nearly doubles. A paper that gives almost twice as long for the same forty questions is not asking the same kind of question, whatever the reasoning behind the change. If your IGCSE multiple-choice technique was to read, recognise and move on, that technique has nowhere to go in seventy-five minutes — and the timing is the evidence for that, not an opinion about difficulty.

The rest of the structure changes too. Both sciences set three components at each level. At IGCSE: the 45-minute multiple-choice paper (30 per cent), a theory paper of 1 hour 15 minutes carrying 80 marks (50 per cent), and a practical component (20 per cent). At AS: multiple choice at 1 hour 15 minutes (31 per cent), a structured-questions paper of 1 hour 15 minutes carrying 60 marks (46 per cent), and Advanced Practical Skills at 2 hours (23 per cent).

Notice the structured paper. The AS paper carries 60 marks in the same 75 minutes in which the IGCSE theory paper carries 80. Fewer marks, identical time — the same pattern as the multiple choice, in the largest single component of the AS qualification.

Mathematics is structured differently again. IGCSE 0580 Extended is two papers of 2 hours and 100 marks each, 50 per cent apiece; Additional Mathematics 0606 is two papers of 2 hours and 80 marks. AS Mathematics 9709 is Paper 1 Pure Mathematics 1 at 1 hour 50 minutes and 75 marks (60 per cent of the AS Level), plus one of Paper 2, 4 or 5, each 1 hour 15 minutes and 50 marks (the remaining 40 per cent).

What You Are Given Changes, and Not Always in Your Favour

Students often assume that a harder course comes with more support material in the exam room. Across these three subjects, that assumption is wrong in three different ways.

Mathematics gains a booklet and loses its non-calculator papers. At IGCSE, half the assessment is non-calculator: the 0580 syllabus (version 3) states that "Calculators are not allowed for Paper 1 and Paper 2", and 0606 Paper 1 is likewise non-calculator. At AS, that discipline disappears entirely — the 9709 syllabus (version 4) states that "It is expected that candidates will have a calculator with standard 'scientific' functions available for use in all the examinations." In exchange, the short formula list printed on page 2 of the IGCSE papers is replaced by a far larger supplied booklet: "A list of formulae and statistical tables (MF19) is supplied in examinations for the use of candidates."

That does not make the calculator a shortcut. The same 9709 syllabus (version 4) states that "Candidates are expected to show all necessary working; no marks will be given for unsupported answers from a calculator." The working that the non-calculator papers used to force out of you is now required on every paper instead.

Chemistry moved in the opposite direction. Cambridge withdrew the Data booklet from AS and A Level Chemistry: "The Data booklet will no longer be provided with Papers 1, 2 and 4. Where data are required these will be provided in the question. All papers will contain a data table of commonly used constants and a Periodic Table." A student expecting to look values up in a booklet, as an earlier cohort did, will not find one.

Biology supplies no formulae at AS at all. The 9700 syllabus does contain a mathematical formulae provision, but it is explicitly marked A Level only. At AS, there is nothing.

One thing is constant across both levels in the sciences: the Periodic Table is printed in the question paper at IGCSE and at AS alike, as the specimen papers for both 0620 and 9701 state on their covers.

Three subjects, three different directions — no general rule to carry between them.

Practical Work Stops Being Optional

This is the change most likely to catch out a student whose school has limited laboratory facilities.

At IGCSE, both Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 let candidates take either a Practical Test or an Alternative to Practical paper. Both are worth 20 per cent, and Cambridge states the two routes assess the same experimental skills. A candidate can complete an IGCSE science, at any grade, without ever being examined in a laboratory.

At AS Level, that choice does not exist. In both Chemistry 9701 and Biology 9700, Paper 3 is described as a timetabled, laboratory-based practical paper, and every candidate sits it. The Biology 9700 syllabus goes further, requiring candidates to carry out activities using a light microscope.

The syllabuses also set an expectation about course time that has no IGCSE equivalent: learners "should spend at least 20 per cent of their time doing practical work". That is a statement about how the course is meant to be taught, not only about how it is assessed.

The Maths Inside the Sciences Moves

There is a quiet change in the science syllabuses that is easy to miss, because it is a change in whose job something is.

The IGCSE science syllabuses treat mathematical requirements as belonging to the maths department. Biology 0610 (version 2) and Chemistry 0620 (version 1) both state that "It is expected that these requirements will be covered as part of a mathematics curriculum at this level of study."

The AS syllabuses reverse this. Biology 9700 (version 1) states that "Teaching the mathematical requirements should be included in the AS & A Level Biology course", and Chemistry 9701 carries parallel wording.

Neither AS science syllabus lists a mathematics qualification under Previous study — the recommendation covers a prior course in the subject or Co-ordinated Science, and nothing else. So the mathematical content is taught inside the science course, and no mathematics qualification is assumed on the way in. That is how the syllabuses describe it.

Which IGCSE You Took Matters

Comparisons between "IGCSE" and "AS" are only meaningful once you name which IGCSE, because the IGCSE syllabuses are not one thing. Mathematics 0580, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 are all tiered: candidates follow either Core or Extended content, sit different papers, and are eligible for different grade ranges. Additional Mathematics 0606 is untiered. The tier matters most in Mathematics, where the 9709 prior-knowledge line assumes 0580 Extended specifically, not Core.

If you took a 9–1 graded IGCSE, the content comparison is unchanged. Cambridge states of Chemistry 0971 that it "is graded from 9 to 1 but is otherwise the same as Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620)", and the same holds for Biology 0970 and 0610. Only the grade scale differs.

What to Do in Term One

Every suggestion here follows from something above, and each is checkable this week.

If you are taking Mathematics, audit yourself against the published list. You are the only one of the three with a single list to audit against. Open the 9709 prior-knowledge section and test yourself on the named items — surds, the shapes of y = kx to the power n, scientific notation for compound units. The syllabus says these are assumed, which means nobody will teach them to you again.

If you are taking Biology, read the topic introductions; if Chemistry, ask. Biology states some of its assumptions inside individual topic introductions, so they are findable if you go topic by topic. Chemistry states none. Either way, ask your teacher in the first fortnight which IGCSE topics they assume you arrive with.

Get into a laboratory early. The alternative-to-practical route is gone, Paper 3 is laboratory-based, and Biology involves microscope work. If your IGCSE went through the Alternative to Practical paper, you may have completed a whole science qualification without a practical exam — and the first one should not be the real one.

Plan around fifty extra hours per subject, not in total. The 130-to-180 figure is per subject; three AS subjects is a different arithmetic problem from one.

Expect maths in your science lessons. Your Biology and Chemistry teachers now carry the mathematical requirements, so those will appear in science homework rather than being covered elsewhere.

Practise the slower question. The timing is unambiguous: the same forty multiple-choice questions now get seventy-five minutes instead of forty-five, and the structured paper carries fewer marks in the same time. Both point at the same kind of question.
