GCSE results day: Thursday 20 August 2026
GCSE results are released on Thursday 20 August 2026, from 8am (UK time). You get them through your school, which will tell you how and where to collect them on the day. If you are not sure what to expect, ask your school before results day.
How GCSEs are graded
GCSEs in England are graded 9 to 1, with 9 the highest grade. The 9 to 1 scale replaced the old A* to G grades.
From GCSE to A Level
The move from GCSE to A Level is the biggest change in how you study so far. You take fewer subjects, and each one goes much deeper: a single A Level covers its subject in far more depth than GCSE, and the pace is faster.
More of the work becomes yours to drive. A Level courses expect independent study (reading around the subject, practising past questions, and finding your own gaps) rather than working only through what is set in class.
Exams change too. GCSE papers largely reward knowing the content; A Level papers reward explaining it and applying it to unfamiliar problems.
Grade boundaries
A grade boundary is the minimum mark needed for each grade in that exam series. Boundaries change from series to series and paper to paper.

Minimum marks for each grade, as published by each board. These tables cover AQA, OCR and Pearson Edexcel. If you sat your GCSEs with another board, including WJEC or Eduqas, your boundaries are on your own board’s site, not here.
